Upper Bremo Barn

One of the first projects we undertook during the spring of 2023 was a barn on Bremo Plantation, in central Virginia. This barn was unique for several reasons. Physically, it’s a large, field stone and brick structure with more architectural flourishes than generally expected on a barn, including a Doric facade complete with four columns and a pediment over the main entrance. It’s historically significant due to the longevity of Bremo plantation itself; established over 200 years ago, the plantation remains under the ownership of its original family, which has allowed for a rare level of historic continuity.

This project was significant to me personally because it was one of the first times I was instructed to do field work primarily on my own. While Will Rourk showed my newer classmates how to use the scanners and worked with them on scanning the barn from a distance, I was sent to capture close-up details with almost no oversight. It was a level of independence in scanning that I hadn’t had previously.
